What to do to counter the impacts of intense heat

Everything you need to know about the evolution of heatwave periods in Quebec

Did you know that new information from an expert at the Institut national de santé publique du Québec (INSPQ) predicts that, within the next 20 years, the number of heatwave days will increase significantly? Specifically, they will rise from around a dozen to approximately fifty during the summer period.

Climate simulations carried out by the INSPQ suggest that heatwaves will not only become more frequent but also more intense. How can we prevent the negative impacts caused by such prolonged heatwaves?

Heatwaves: who are the most vulnerable?

We often hear that the elderly and children are the most at risk during heatwaves. But do you really know why?

Heatwaves and the elderly

The elderly sweat less, and sweating is the process responsible for cooling the body, which is obviously crucial during a heatwave. Essentially, older adults are at risk of heatstroke. Additionally, the sensation of thirst decreases with age, which increases the risks, as these individuals may not hydrate properly.

Heatwaves and children

Similarly, children are also a particularly vulnerable group during heatwaves. In this case, the situation is quite the opposite. A child sweats much more than an adult, which helps regulate their body temperature. However, by sweating this much, they are at risk of dehydration.

How to prevent the negative effects of intense heat

Knowing the negative impacts of very high temperatures, it’s also important to be aware of prevention solutions. Here is a non-exhaustive list of habits and behaviors to adopt during a heatwave:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Eat fruits, as they are full of water
  • Avoid alcohol and coffee
  • Eat even if you don’t feel hungry
  • Wear loose clothing, light fabrics, and skip the jeans, for example
  • Avoid intense physical exertion (not just sports, but even gardening, for instance)
  • Stay indoors in cool air, especially if you have air conditioning
  • If you must be outdoors, take frequent breaks

The scorching heat… at home

We sometimes overlook the importance of maintaining an adequate indoor temperature at home. We often recommend spending time in well-ventilated places like shopping centers, cinemas, and grocery stores. But what happens when we return home? For instance, at bedtime, it’s crucial that the temperature in bedrooms is comfortable, especially in children’s rooms. If you don’t have air conditioning at home, a few smart choices can save you:

  • Keep windows closed during the day and open them in the evening when the temperature drops
  • Use fans
  • Close curtains during the day
  • Minimize the use of household appliances

Never neglect the impact of heat

In short, whatever you do, never underestimate the impact of intense heat. Take note of the changes you can make in your habits to counteract the negative effects of extreme heat and heatwaves as much as possible. This is especially true if you have vulnerable people in your circle, such as children and the elderly. Are you considering getting an air conditioner?
