We’re sure you’re aware that summer often requires constant adaptation to the temperature, making it a bit tricky to figure out what to wear in the morning. If you work in an air-conditioned office, the dilemma becomes even more real.
Every day, it’s the same story!
You’re eager to dress lightly and enjoy the short summer to the fullest. But once seated at your desk, it’s your feet, shoulders, and even fingers that start to suffer. Suddenly, you find yourself relying on blankets, your precious ally for the next few months.
Have you ever wondered WHY the temperature is kept so low in offices?
Believe it or not, this issue is largely related to gender. Several decades ago, most people in the workforce were men, and they all wore suits, including jackets! It was natural to keep the ambient temperature cooler. Today, that era is long gone. In fact, between 2007 and 2017, the Institut de la statistique du Québec reported that women made up 47.6% of the workforce, compared to 52.4% of men.
Temperature difference between men and women
Research indicates that several factors are responsible for why women tend to feel colder than men. For instance, women typically produce up to 35% less heat than men. Considering this difference, it’s entirely reasonable to acknowledge it. It appears that men are comfortable at around 21°C, while women prefer around 25°C.
It goes without saying that it’s hard to work productively when you’re cold and your fingers are numb. In fact, studies have shown that a cold office reduces productivity. Researchers from Cornell University in New York found that the optimal temperature for productivity is 25°C. They go even further, stating that keeping the office at 25°C can double employee productivity. Quite impressive!
Are you an employee? Now you have all the information you need to make your case to your boss. Are you an employer? You’ll gain plenty of benefits from making the switch: more comfortable employees, more productive and efficient. It’s a win-win scenario for you and your staff. 🙂
